The whales of August

The old lady sat staring into the blue
Sun kissing her leather skin
Mermaids fork combing her silver hair
Playing cats cradle with her hands
She looked at the strings as a lifeline
Childhood memories dangling on her fingertips

Raising a horn carved from whale bone
A siren was blown echoing across the lake
Summoning the whales to the shore

Realising she had precious time left
The old lady crawled onto the rocks
Watching the whales dance below
Glittering sun bounced off the water
Lighting up her smile
Her husbands face emerging
In the rippling mirror

Reaching out her arms for an embrace
Her body tumbled forward
As she flew down into the endless depths
Eyes closed like a baby
Her hair unravelling like reeds

As the evening sun melted on the lake
Cherry blossom began to fall
Her cottage lying empty
Left hanging on the porch was her childhood mobile
Dangling, spinning in the wind

The German Filmstar

In a city of vultures
Glittering in their eyes
Red masts of television towers flash
To the dictatorships demise

Decaying studios from times gone by
Echo with the sound
Of the German Film Stars voice

With translucent skin
And razor sharp cheekbones
He never smiles

Whilst travelling high on a plane
Suspended in the blood red sky
He peers through the clouds
Watching autumn leaves fall

Whilst down below
Women’s hearts melt
On the East German sidewalk

Heaven

Through the gates of heaven
Lies an abyss of stars
Memories flickering like twilight
Onto a crashed scrapheap of souls

Skulls blooming with flowers
A nuclear heart of the prophet beating
Running underpowered

God sits regally on his throne
Rolling his marbles
Seeds dispersed from his fingertips
Light bulbs of brains
Sizzled out with one switch

His legs dangling
Above the universe
As people swarm underneath
Like a colony of ants

Fallen Empires

Skittles of skulls roll
As Empires fall
Leaving vultures empty handed

Sinking sand lies in the palm of my hand
Trapping their flies who spy
That have landed

A clench of the fist
To a snake biting hiss
Tells their dreams
Can’t be granted

A flash in the air
Of hurricane despair
Damages their armies beyond
Oil and repair

With their bloodied hands full
Their Empires can’t be mended

Washing machine

Structures of bone
Crash down
As debris is washed up
On the shore

Beads glisten in the sun
As old ornaments from days gone by
Resurface pulverised
Shining like shells

The washing cycle of the ocean
Spins endlessly into the night
A turbulent machine
Powered by the moon

Sucking all matter in
Spitting it out
Transformed, deformed
Shape shifted
Through a storm

Hourglass

The heavens crack open
As the hourglass falls from the sky
Unleashing a sea of flies
Shattering like a movement sublime

As sunset bleeds into autumn
In the stillness of the night
Memories dissolve like snow
Peeling back the years
As soldiers raise their broken glasses
Drinking down their tears
